Domain renewal terms

Expired Domains Policy

This policy explains what happens when a domain name is not renewed by its expiry date, including renewal reminders, suspension, recovery periods and possible fees.

Avoid expiry

Keep your contact details up to date and renew domains before their expiry date.

Contact support
If a domain is not renewed by its expiry date, it may stop working. This can affect websites, email and other services that depend on the domain.

What happens when a domain expires

Domain names must be renewed on time. If payment fails or a customer does not manually renew a domain, the domain may expire and cease to operate.

Payment failure

A domain may expire if Sheridan Internet is unable to take payment using the payment method held on the customer account.

Renewal reminders

Customers are responsible for keeping their email address up to date so renewal reminders can be received.

Services may stop

Once expired, a domain may stop resolving. Websites, email and DNS-dependent services may fail.

Recovery period

Expired domains may still be recoverable for a limited period, subject to registry rules and fees.

If a domain name is not renewed by its expiry date, it shall cease to operate and shall be deemed to have expired.

A domain name may expire if Sheridan Internet is unable to take payment using the payment method stored on the customer’s Sheridan Internet account, or if the customer fails to manually renew the domain name.

It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that the email address stored on their Sheridan Internet account is up to date and able to receive renewal reminders from Sheridan Internet.

The customer acknowledges that three calendar days after the date of expiry, Sheridan Internet may, at its sole discretion, carry out one or more of the following actions:

  • Renew the domain name.
  • Park the domain name on different name servers from those set by the customer, including Sheridan Internet name servers.
  • Update DNS or hosting arrangements connected with the expired domain where appropriate.

During expiry or suspension, services connected to the domain name may stop working. This can include websites, email, DNS records and other domain-dependent services.

Following expiry of the domain name, the customer acknowledges that they have up to 16 days to contact Sheridan Internet to retrieve and renew the domain name, where applicable at the registry, provided that the customer pays the renewal fee due.

If Sheridan Internet receives a request from the customer to renew the domain name after the 16-day period, the customer agrees to pay a £100.00 redemption fee, together with any renewal fee due.

All prices exclude VAT, charged at the applicable rate.

The above process applies to many domain extensions. However, some country-code top-level domains and registry-operated domain extensions may have different expiry, suspension, renewal, redemption, deletion or restoration rules.

For .uk domain names, expiry, suspension, renewal, redemption, deletion and restoration may be governed by Nominet’s applicable .UK lifecycle policies. Where those policies differ from this policy, the applicable Nominet policy will apply.

If you have a question about a specific domain extension, including .uk domain names, please contact Sheridan Internet support before the domain expires.

The customer acknowledges that Sheridan Internet has discretion to vary renewal rates from time to time without prior direct notice.

Renewal, recovery and redemption charges may vary depending on the domain extension, registry, registrar and stage of the expiry process.

On receipt of the renewal fee by Sheridan Internet within the 16-day period, the customer will retain ownership of the requested domain where restoration is available.

As soon as reasonably practicable, Sheridan Internet shall restore the requested domain name to the customer’s control panel or normal management arrangements.

The customer acknowledges that 16 calendar days after the date of expiry, if Sheridan Internet has not received the renewal fee or an instruction to renew the domain name, Sheridan Internet may, at its sole discretion and subject to applicable registry rules, take further action in relation to the domain name.

This may include one or more of the following actions:

  • Auctioning, reselling or otherwise disposing of the domain name.
  • Changing the contact or registrant details associated with the domain name.
  • Transferring the domain name.
  • Allowing the domain name to be released or deleted by the registry.

If Sheridan Internet does not receive the renewal fee within the 16-day period set out above, Sheridan Internet may, at its discretion, terminate the agreement and change ownership of the requested domain.

Sheridan Internet endeavours to renew domain names on behalf of the customer where instructed and where payment has been received or can be collected.

However, Sheridan Internet makes no guarantee that all attempted renewals will be successful.

It is the registrant’s responsibility to check the relevant WHOIS or registry record to ensure that their domain name has been renewed.
